About the work

On a long, narrow ivory-coloured platter lies a row of ten plums, arranged tightly one beside another. Their deep navy blue is broken by lighter, matte patches of bloom. On the stalk of one of them perches a dragonfly with iridescent, green-blue wings, the most saturated accent of the composition. The background is filled with a grey-blue pattern of silvery pine sprigs, while the lower part of the painting is occupied by a white tablecloth with distinct creases, rendered in soft transitions of grey. The elongated, intimate format and the rhythmic repetition of the fruit give this still life a calm, orderly character. The cool range of white, silver-grey and navy blue creates the impression of a moment held in stillness, interrupted only by the small figure of the insect. The smooth, careful painting of the details is best seen up close, so the painting suits a dining room or a quiet study.
