Description
About the work
Four figures stand side by side against a warm background. Three wear black habits with wide white collars and veils; the fourth, with long white hair, wears a black dress fastened with a row of buttons. The one furthest to the left smiles, her cheeks flushed, while the others look stern. The background moves from mustard yellow and ochre through rust red to dark green at the lower edge, and thin white lines outline the sleeves and belts. The surface is crossed by fine vertical streaks. The simplified, drawing-like manner of painting and the exaggerated expressions lend "Sisters II" a cheerful, good-naturedly ironic tone. The scene calls to mind a conversation interrupted mid-word. The deep black of the habits stands out sharply against the golden background, and the intimate format of the painting will work well on a light wall of a study or library.

About the artist
Hanna Rojkowska
Hanna Rojkowska (b. 1955 in Kraków) completed her sculpture studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. In 1981 she defended her diploma in the studio of Antoni Hajdecki, and a few years later she focused on painting. She most often creates small gouaches; she also uses oil paints. Recurring motifs in her works include cats, angels and lovers. She simplifies her figures, focusing attention on their characters and mutual relationships. She combines observation of everyday life with humour.
