Kolektyw THESEUS

THESEUS – an art collective established by Aleksandra Cupiał and Szymon Parafiniak in 2016. In their works the artists concentrate above all on the search for energy, light and movement. The artists work in painting, printmaking, sculpture and video. The leading motif in the works of the THESEUS collective is the sign of the labyrinth. Since 2019 the artists have been creating a cycle titled ELEMENTA – inspired by Empedocles’ ancient Greek concept of the elements and by Plato’s regular polyhedra. The elements present in THESEUS’s art raise questions about our cognitive abilities: just as light does not penetrate the area of shadow, so cognition and understanding (gnosis) seem helpless in the face of the contents and truths hidden from us. It is therefore necessary to be aware that we are not speaking here of absolute values, as in the case of brightness or darkness, but of their symbolic, sign-based representation. Thanks to THESEUS’s artefacts, it turns out how capacious the sign of the labyrinth is: it leads towards the meanders of inquiry and of our path, and at once depicts being lost and attempting to find a way out. “Piotr Głowacki Participation in exhibitions: 1.
