About the artist
Born in 1946. Painter, performer, author of polychrome decorations, and designer of stained glass and church interiors. He began his artistic education at the Secondary School of Fine Arts in Kraków, where his parents, Maria and Janusz Bogucki, settled after the war. In the second half of the 1950s they were active in the Kraków Group and co-founded the Krzysztofory Gallery, of which Maria Bogucka was the first director. Michał Bogucki graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, in the studio of Stefan Gierowski. He made his debut with the solo exhibition "Sacred Exercises" in 1971 at the Contemporary Gallery in Warsaw. It was followed by solo exhibitions in galleries in Warsaw, Poznań, Lublin, Wrocław, Gdańsk, Düsseldorf, Buffalo, Seattle, Batumi and Tbilisi. He took part in the international art festival at Malmö Konsthall and in the 9th Biennale des Jeunes in Paris. As an artist and organiser, he took part in the independent exhibitions held during martial law, organised by Maria and Janusz Bogucki, and later by Janusz Bogucki and Nina Smolarz. Exhibition work also occupies an important place in Michał Bogucki's output. He was curator and scenographer of exhibitions of Jerzy Nowosielski in Warsaw, Olsztyn, Książ Castle in Wałbrzych, Lviv, Vilnius, Moscow, Santiago de Compostela, Valencia, Saragossa, Barcelona and Bucharest. From 2009 to 2019 he created and ran the Museum of Icons in Warsaw. Recent exhibitions include: - Michał Bogucki: Painting (October 2021), Arte Hotel in Zamość; - The Road… Stalowa Stop (2021/2022), STALOWA Gallery; Through the Eye of Abstraction – Painting. Performance. Action Art (2022), Częstochowa Museum; - A Meeting of Times. Michał Bogucki – painting, Janusz Bogucki – drawing, gouache (2022/2023), Museum of the Archdiocese of Warsaw; - Landscape of Polish Painting (2023/2024), Zachęta Gallery of Art; - If You Fall Silent, the Stones Will Cry Out (2023), Stara Drukarnia – Mińska 65, Warsaw. Besides easel painting, Michał Bogucki is also an icon painter. Since April this year, an icon of Blessed Michał Giedroyć, painted by his own hand, has been in St Mark's Church in Kraków.
