About the work

The upper part of the vertical composition is filled by a large red semicircle, divided by black lines into bands like a stained-glass window. The fields are covered with spirals, zigzags and circles in vermilion, orange and white, and a small cobalt square sits at the top. A thin red axis descends from the semicircle, reaching a black plinth. Beside it stand two simplified black figures with white accents, one upright, the other seated. The background is made of flat rectangles of grey beneath a navy-tinged black, and the whole is closed off by a broad red band. A dense, vibrating ornament meets the cool geometry of the lower part. The red radiates warmth, while the grey and black quieten it. The scene gives the impression of a moment of concentration beneath an illuminated vault. In a study with light walls, the painting will become a strong red accent.
