Casanova's Night – Nude

Description

About the work

A naked woman with light brown hair stands beside a Gothic column with tracery, her arms shielding her breasts and a red drapery running along her hips. She looks straight ahead. Behind her rises a densely built city of domes, spires and pointed-arch windows, and at its foot, on navy-blue water, gilded gondolas sway. Above the rooftops hang two orange discs and a pale, bluish moon. The painting is built on the contrast between cool violets, indigo and blue and warm gold, ochre and red. The paint, applied in small, grainy touches, creates a shimmering, almost mosaic-like texture in which the body and the walls seem to glow from within. The whole gives the impression of a sensual night-time tale suspended between waking and dreaming. The saturated, evening palette and medium format suit a bedroom or an intimate living room.
