Description
About the work
The slender figure of a girl plays the violin, seated on the edge of a tall, bell-shaped plinth. Her head bows towards the instrument, her elbow with the bow extends to the side, and her skirt spreads wide like a petal. One leg rests against the base, the other hangs freely, and the curved arm of the plinth forms an openwork gap. The surface is dark, with a coppery-brown sheen on the smooth base. In the rough folds of the dress and hair, livid and greenish discolourations appear. The contrast between the smoothed plinth and the roughly modelled figure gives the work a lively rhythm, and the silhouette gives the impression of being caught in the middle of a melody. "Violinist" by Wiesław Kwak is of intimate size and gains when viewed from different sides. Its warm, dark tone will suit a shelf in a study or a chest of drawers in a living room.
